President's Report: Round Two

Published Sat 22 Apr 2017

With four wins out of six games over the weekend it was a reasonable result for the Club.  However the long trip up to Swan Athletic proved to be another tough day at the office for our League team.  It is always difficult to win there and if you're not totally on the ball you pay the price, as we have seen in previous years.  That was the case on Saturday against a bigger and well organised Swan Athletic side.  Our lads were right in the game for a half, but were overpowered as the game went on, going down 9.7 (61) to 17.10 (112).  The result serves as a healthy early wake up call and reminder about what is needed to return to the winning list next week.  Lots to work on on the track, in preparation.

Both the B Reserves and Drew Banfield Colts were also  embroiled in tough challenges against Swan Valley. Both games could have gone either way, but North showed enormous commitment to fight it out to the end and claw their way to narrow victories.  The reserves fought out a titanic struggle, winning by the smallest of margins: 8.10 (58) to 8.9 (57). Likewise the Colts showed great desire and were relentless in their narrow one goal victory:  9.4 (58) to 8.4 (52).  Congratulations to Sam, Prigas and the lads for a terrific effort!

The Brett Jones Colts were not as lucky in their tussle with Trinity Aquinas, at home.  It was a good, close and hard game throughout with both sides giving everything! It was very pleasing to see our lads developing and accepting the challenge. The more the game went on, the better the boys played.  Either team could have won, but our lads fell 5 points short: 7:10 (53) to 8.9 (57).  There's no doubt the Colts will continue to improve as the season progresses.

It would be excusable if anyone at The Gil thought they were watching cricket, given the scores in the seniors' games!  The Thirds and Fourths produced terrific football to totally overpower and overwhelm their less skilled Whitfords opponents.  In a powerhouse display, the Fourths lit up the scoreboard with a massive victory and all players contributing: 33.18 (216) to 0.1 (1).  The 10 goals from big Corey was another highlight on the day.  Similarly the Thirds were simply clinical with their game plan and relentlessly allowed no opportunity for Whitfords to get into the game. The lads were simply more skilled, better organised and hungry for victory, with another huge score:  30.12 (192) to 0.1 (1).  Both teams need to be complimented on not releasing the accelerator, at any time, in both games, to remain focused and committed for the entire game. Congratulations to Trent, Clint and the lads!

It was also great to see so many numbers return to The Federal Hotel for awards on Saturday night.  Yes, we had some losses and licking of wounds, but the spirit among everyone was terrific and upbeat as we head to next week's games.  See you all on the track!
